mObywatel abroad: Polish digital ID, travel and online services
For a Polish citizen living in the UK, USA or Israel, mObywatel can be a useful connection to Polish public services. But the app, the digital identity document and your physical passport do different jobs. Start by deciding what you need to do.
Reviewed: 4 October 2026 · For people handling Polish documents from abroad
Can you use mObywatel outside Poland?
You can use supported online functions from abroad, subject to access and identity requirements. However, mDowód is intended for identity confirmation in Poland: it is not a travel document and is not recognised as an identity document abroad. Keep the physical document required for your journey. Official mDowód guidance.
For example, checking a Polish government service on your phone while in London is a different situation from presenting the screen at a foreign airport. Access to the app does not establish what a border authority will accept.
mObywatel, mDowód and a Polish passport
mObywatel is the application. mDowód is a digital identity document available within it to eligible users. Your Polish passport is a separate physical travel document. Activating one does not apply for or renew another.
- Use the official app information to check whether you can add mDowód.
- Check the accepted identity and travel documents with the authority relevant to your journey.
- If you need a passport appointment, check the consulate’s supporting-document requirements before ordering records.
mDowód also has its own series and number. A difference from the number on your plastic identity card is not itself an error. Do not copy a number from one document into a form asking specifically for the other. Official document-number explanation.
How to start if you live abroad
Use the official mObywatel website to reach the app stores and current activation instructions. The available identity route matters more than the country in which you download the app. Check eligibility for each document separately; having Polish ancestry is not the same as already having the identity records needed for activation.
Official instructions include activation using an e-dowód with the required active certificate and a compatible NFC phone. Follow the current instructions for your device and document.
If you need a trusted-profile route instead, read Profil Zaufany from abroad without a Polish bank account. A confirmation point may be more practical than opening a new bank account solely for an online identity service.
Which online services should you check?
The browser version of mObywatel provides access to supported public services and information. Treat its current service catalogue as your starting point, rather than assuming every task shown in an old tutorial still follows the same route.
For correspondence with a Polish authority, check whether the task now uses e-Doręczenia, a dedicated online form or an ePUAP route allowed for that procedure. Our e-Doręczenia guide for people abroad explains why logging into a service and delivering an application are separate steps.
What if the information does not match your documents?
Make a small comparison before requesting a change: the name in your Polish passport, your Polish birth or marriage record, and the foreign document you are trying to use. Note which record contains the disputed information and what outcome you need.
A foreign marriage that has not been registered in Poland, a genuinely incorrect entry and a request to adopt a different name call for different document work. Reinstalling the app will not resolve every underlying record problem.
- Foreign civil record registration can help coordinate registration of an event abroad.
- Civil record correction concerns incorrect or missing record details.
- Passport document preparation helps organise the agreed records for a later personal application.
Before you rely on the app
- Identify the exact function or document you need.
- Check the current official eligibility and activation instructions.
- Keep the appropriate physical travel documents available.
- Confirm the authority’s current submission route and required signature.
- Save the application and delivery evidence outside the phone when handling an important case.
This separates a technical access problem from a missing-document problem, so you can ask the relevant provider or authority a precise question.
Frequently asked questions
Can I travel with mDowód instead of a passport?
No. mDowód is not a travel document. Use the physical passport or other travel document accepted for your journey.
Does mObywatel give me Polish citizenship?
No. It is an application for public services and digital documents. Citizenship and the evidence needed for identity documents are separate matters.
Can PoloniaHub activate my identity account for me?
Account activation and personal identity confirmation are completed through the official service. Our quoted work concerns document preparation and administrative support.
