Where the evidence comes from
1999 is the dividing line. Contributions from that year are recorded on the insured person’s ZUS account; earlier periods are taken into account through the initial capital and are usually documented with employer records.
Periods from 1999
konto ubezpieczonego w ZUSContributions paid from 1999 are recorded on the individual ZUS account, so a contribution history can be issued relatively quickly.

Periods before 1999

Records for a foreign pension claim
We handle the request in Polish, prepare the power of attorney and obtain evidence in the form a foreign pension authority asks for, including periods before 1999 that need tracing.
How Polish periods count towards a foreign pension
ZUS (Zakład Ubezpieczeń Społecznych) records show the periods during which a person was insured and the employers who paid contributions.
EU and EEA
Social security coordination under Regulation (EC) No 883/2004 requires each country to take account of insurance periods completed in the others.
Bilateral agreements
Poland also has social security agreements with countries including the United States, Canada, Australia, Israel and Ukraine.
Proof the foreign institution needs
The foreign institution asks for documentary proof of the Polish periods. If it has written to you, send us that letter: it tells us what form the proof has to take.
Who ZUS releases records to
ZUS issues insurance and contribution records to the insured person, and to a third party only on the basis of a power of attorney.
Periods before 1999
Earlier periods mean locating employer documentation, which may sit with a successor company, a storage firm or a state archive. It takes weeks rather than days.
Unpaid contributions
Contributions an employer never paid do not appear. Where the employer’s documents survive, the period can sometimes still be established; where neither exists, we tell you rather than continue a search that cannot succeed.
Before you order
Short answers to the questions we hear most often.
What exactly does ZUS confirm?
Periods of insurance, contributions paid and the employers who paid them: the evidence a pension authority needs.
I worked in Poland before 1999. Is that a problem?
It takes longer, because those periods are documented with employer records, but it is routine work.
Do I need a PESEL number first?
Not necessarily, but having one speeds the search considerably.
Is my ZUS online account enough?
It shows many details if you have a PESEL, but a foreign pension authority may ask for evidence in a specific form. We request the records your case needs.
Is a ZUS record the same as a świadectwo pracy?
No. ZUS evidence concerns insurance or contribution data. If an authority asks for an employment certificate, see our employment certificate service.
